What is BackHome?

www.virbac-backhome.co.uk

BackHome is the most effective secure way to address your pet's s.

Lets face it, it's impossible to keep track of your pets every minute of the day and night. As a caring owner you'll know what a worry the prospect of them disappearing can be. No matter how careful you are, there is always the chance that your pet will go astray. And when you're away with your pet in unfamiliar surroundings it's all too easy to become separated.

You know how worrying such occasions are, but what can you do about it?.

The trouble is you can't always rely on collars to bring your pet back. They can break or become detached and owner and address details can become illegible. As a result it may be impossible to trace ownership back to you when your pet is found and taken to the police, dog warden or other authorities.

Sadly pets which haven't been reunited with their owners are often put to sleep by animal rescue organisations whose accommodation is already at bursting point. So what's the answer?

It's time to inject a little technology.

BackHome is simple, neat and effective. A tiny microchip the size of a grain of rice is injected under your pet's skin. The microchip carries a code unique to you and your pet. The code is entered onto the Anibase national computer database  and appears on a certificate of identification issued to you.

When a special scanner is passed over your pet the chip responds by transmitting it's unique code to the scanner. It's as easy as using a supermarket bar-code reader. The operator can read the code on the scanner's display and then refer to the national database to identify your name, address and phone number so that you and your pet can be reunited.

These microchip scanners are in routine use by veterinarians and municipal dog wardens all over the UK. It's the same with pet rescue and animal welfare organisations like the RSPCA and SSPCA and the Cats Protection League. Therefore wherever your pet is found, it is likely somebody will read his/her BackHome microchip.

Once this is done, the national database can be accessed rapidly by phone any time of the day or night. So as soon as your pet's identity is discovered, the process of getting your pet BackHome can begin.

A small price to pay for greater peace of mind.

Each pet requires a single BackHome microchip. The process is completely safe and causes no more discomfort than other injections. Pets of all sizes from small birds, exotics and fish to large dogs and horses can be chipped. In the case of dogs and cats the preferred location is the scruff of the neck.

BackHome is inexpensive and the one-off payment includes lifetime registration on the national database as well as all documentation. It is a security measure which literally lasts for life. BackHome microchipping represents excellent value for money and peace of mind.

How to get your pet microchipped with BackHome.

Pet microchipping is available from veterinary surgeons all over the country. When you next visit your veterinary practice, whatever the reason, simply ask about BackHome. It's likely it can be done at the same visit. The first vaccination of young pets is the ideal time to have them 'chipped.' That way they're literally covered for live.

Registration

Until registration is completed, protection against loss is not fully effective.

Registration on our web site can be done by your veterinary surgery. It is a simple procedure and ensures that your pet’s details are recorded on our database before you leave the surgery. In the event of your pet going missing then this information would be immediately available to all re-homing centres. Alternatively, registration can be done by mail.

If you want to change your registration details you can do it yourself on the BackHome web site, although to ensure security you will require your pet’s BackHome microchip number and security code. This can be found on your BackHome certificate .You can also add temporary addresses for you and your animal, when you go on holiday, for instance, in the unfortunate event that your pet should die, we would also ask that you notify us the BackHome web site. This will keep the database up to date and greatly assist the rescue services in their work.

Readers & Scanners

There are now thousand's of microchip readers in use throughout the UK so that there are many opportunities for a lost animal to be scanned for a microchip (eg, by the police, by the dog wardens by the RSPCA etc...)

The recently introduced ISO worldwide standard means that all microchips and scanners to this standard are compatible with each other.

Reader Network

Pet owners often ask " if my pet is lost or stolen, will it be scanned when it is picked up?". The comprehensive reader network and the many success stories support the fact that it will.
A network of over 4000 scanners means that a wayward pet will come across a scanner during the natural course of events rather than having to be specifically taken to one.

The network includes Veterinary Surgeries, Stray Kennels, Dog Wardens, Cats Protection League Branches, Cruelty and Welfare Societies, Horse Sale Rings, Abattoirs and Trading Standards Officers.

Alternatively you can send the slip at the foot of the Certificate or a letter with your pet’s microchip number and new address details along with a cheque or postal order for £5. If we don't receive a reply to the letter after this time we are legally allowed to amend the relevant details on our database.

If I move abroad should I let you know?

A: Yes, we would advise that you follow the change of address procedure outlined above. Our main reason for this is if your pet were to go missing abroad the scanners may detect the microchip as an English chip and the authorities or Vets may phone IDENTICHIP for details. Registration on the IDENTICHIP web site is a simple procedure and ensures that your pet's details are recorded on the database before you leave the surgery. In the event of your pet going missing then this information would be immediately available to all re-homing centres.

What is Tracer® www.tracer-microchips.co.uk

Tracer® is a microchip for permanent identification of pet animals.

The microchip, hardly bigger than a grain of rice, is designed to sit comfortably under your pet’s skin. Tracer is the most comprehensive animal identification system available in the UK, with benefits that include a secure database managed by the Kennel Club and individual wallets for each pet owner’s documentation.

Whether you are a pet owner or a veterinary surgery, you can find out more information about the Tracer® microchip and pet identification on the Tracer® website www.tracer-microchips.co.uk

Why microchip with Tracer®

Every year more than 300,000 treasured family pets get lost or go missing.

Having a Tracer microchip implanted is quick and simple - just like an ordinary injection. And once it's done, it lasts a lifetime.

Tracer is a tiny microchip, hardly bigger than a grain of rice. The chip itself is encased in a special capsule that is designed to sit comfortably under your pet's skin.

Every Tracer chip has a unique 15-digit code, and this is the key to your pet's details - including your name, address and phone number.

Tracer is invisible and can't be tampered with but, most importantly, microchipping is highly effective and is the method of permanent identification most widely used by veterinary surgeons.*

How does Tracer work?

First, your vet injects the Tracer microchip into the animal - if it's a dog, cat or rabbit, this will be just under the loose skin of the neck. It's quite straightforward, just like having a routine vaccination.

After that, there’s nothing else to do - unless your pet goes missing. If it does, most vets, animal charities and local authorities have microchip readers, so when someone hands your pet in, they can read the chip's 15 digit code.

This identifies your pet on the Petlog secure database, where all its details are registered. The database is accessible 24 hours a day, 356 days a year, so Tracer is effective no matter when your pet turns up.

Then it's just a simple case of giving you a call, and reuniting you with your pet as soon as possible.

More than 3 million animals in the UK currently have a microchip implanted and the number is growing fast. Microchipping is also a legal requirement for animals travelling abroad under Defra's Pet Travel Scheme.

Can any animal be microchipped?

Tracer is suitable for use in dogs, cats, horses, birds, small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs and even reptiles such as snakes, lizards and tortoises.

How does it work?

1/ LOST: If your pet is lost and has a Tracer microchip

2/ RESCUE: it is likely that your pet will be taken to the police, dog warden or a veterinary practice- most have Scanners

3/ SCANNED: it will be scanned and Tracer will emit your pet's unique number

4/ IDENTIFICATION: with the unique number, Petlog can identify the pet‘s owner

5/ FOUND: Owners are contacted and are reunited with their pet
